Measure for Measure

In fairy tales there is sometimes this puzzling moment when the perpetrator gets confronted with his or her own deeds and passes a harsh judgement that will be used against them.

The two things that bewilder are: First that they do not recognize themselves and secondly that they show no compassion, but then those are probably the traits to make them perfect villains - not being able to reflect and knowing no mercy.
