There is this place of contrasts, on the one hand the quarry pond, where people go to relax in the sunshine, and just across the street the prison for juvenile deliquents. Passing this place of extremes on a bike tour, Adrian starts considering the prison, when suddenly he raises his hand, waving to a prisoner in open prison, sitting in an open window sunbathing; and the prisoner waves back.

And the eight merry kings gathered their garments and let their fool hang them.
The fool though was immediately swallowed by the Spirit of Oblivion.

Transsubstantiation or Koets naar Wenen - Milksop III

Throughout the book Christianity and especially Krista's faith play a pivotal part - in the movie there is the music that often turns the forrest into a giant cathedral. So Krista is praying a lot, though what she is praying for, may seem not that Christian at all. She actually prays to God to give her the strength, especially the mental strength, to kill Hans - an eye for an eye, Hans' life for her husband's, who has been hanged by the Germans.

Yet, what really blew my mind, is the final image, the final page, when Krista is returning with Hans' body and in her mind, there happens a transsubstantiation, as Hans' body and the blood turn into the Eucharist - host and wine. I wonder about the movie because it isn't quite that obvious, since just the body is presented with a bloody cloth covering the face, lying on the hay. Anyway I see the point and it is right, between the two of them there happened something sacred and in his innocence he becomes a Christ-like figure, he has to bear the sins. - Agnus Dei!

The big surprise while reading the book came on one of the final pages, when it is revealed that the soldier not only bears the name Hans but also is given a birthday. What better way to pay homage to the person who portrayed Hans in the movie than giving the fictitious character the actor's actual birthday - the 16th of February?!

Impressions

Of a very good actor it's hard to do an impression, because he will be impressed by his role and do it justice. And yet he will be the source of a lot of impressions, for which the graphic artist will be grateful.

A term I learned yesterday "huidhonger/ skin hunger", which connotes the hunger for physical contact and is apparently as essential a need as feeding or drinking. It gives confidence and security.

coincidence - So I  fell in love with the movie and then I come to know that the script writer, Jan Procházka, has also written a book based on the movie. But alas there is no German or English translation and I can't actually read Czech, just then I discover that there is a Dutch translation, which is a language I am able to read and understand.
